LA SOUFRIERE VOLCANO

La Soufriere Volcano, which rises majestically to over 4,000 feet is located in the mountainous northern section of St. Vincent – the largest and most northern island of this archipelagic state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines – and is perhaps the most spectacular of the active volcanoes in the Caribbean.
Visitors, who revel in adventure /eco-tourism, would find La Soufriere Volcano one of the major attractions in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The full-day hike to La Soufriere is both exhilarating and challenging. There are two routes: via the Windward side, which is more popular; or via the Leeward route, which starts at Chateaubelair and is longer and less defined.
The twenty six mile drive from capital Kingstown to La Soufriere takes about one and a half hours. It is a three-mile assent from the foot of the volcano to the crater.
There is a path into the crater that offers further adventure for the more energetic and brave hikers.
La Soufriere Volcano last erupted here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in April 1979.
